Go All Out In OBX

Just off the coast of North Carolina lies the Outer Banks, a 100-mile stretch of barrier islands that offer a welcome relief from crowded cities and overrun tourist spots. While it may not have the quintessential tiki bar, bright flowers, and tropical sun, these islands do offer unlimited adventure, unparalleled natural beauty, a rich culture and history, and so much more.

FOR THE ADVENTURER

Hangliding, kayaking, kiteboarding, sailing … you get the picture. This is an outdoor recreational oasis for anyone looking to stretch their legs in the summer or spring. Winter temperatures usually drop down to the 50’s, making it the perfect time of year to explore the islands by foot. Hike in Jockey’s Ridge State Park and see the tallest sand dunes on the east coast and take a day trip to the famous Roanoke Island for a change of scenery and a visit to the North Carolina Aquarium.

FOR THE ARTIST

There’s no shortage of inspiration for the artists on the island, and it’s apparent in the year-round, family friendly art festivals, art walks, and exhibits. All together, there are about 20 art galleries or studios in the area, including the widely popular Blue Pelican Gallery in Hatteras which houses numerous pieces by local artists. Plan a fall visit to check out the New World Festival of the Arts event on the Monteo waterfront or the Hatteras Village Waterfowl Festival in spring.

FOR THE HISTORIAN

Step into an ever-evolving American story in OBX, home of the first flight and first Union victory in the Civil War. Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial before making stops at five lighthouses along the islands including Cape Hatteras, the country’s tallest brick lighthouse. No getaway would be complete without a trip to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, where the English first attempted colonization from 1584-1590.

Redefine the “island” experience and book a getaway filled with year-round adventure, unique art, breathtaking landscapes, and a rich history — only found in Outer Banks, NC.
